MEDICAL SECURITY OFFICER RECRUIT
DEFINITION:
Under direction and close supervision of a supervisory officer in
a hospital or facility, Department of Human Services,
receives on-the-job training and instruction and performs
paraprofessional and manual duties involved in the treatment,
care, and custody of patients or residents who require medical
security; does other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Organizes assigned work and develops effective methods.
Performs a variety of duties to provide for physical well-being,
custody, and care of patients or residents in an assigned ward,
area, or building.
Escorts patients or residents to treatment, therapy, recreation,
vocational, educational, and religious programs or to meals,
wards, or rooms.
May participate in educational, vocational, and other therapeutic
activities.
Participates in taking active part in team meetings, group therapy,
admission and discharge, staff, and other therapeutic activities.
Maintains order and discipline within the hospital and on the
grounds.
May clean assigned wards and areas within the hospital.
Supervises patient or residents vocational rehabilitation programs in
food services, housekeeping, laundry services, and patient commissary.
May feed patients or residents and serve meals.
May help bathe, dress, and prepare patients or residents for bed.
May care for linen supplies for assigned wards or other areas
within the hospital.
Helps keep wards and other areas in a clean, neat condition.
Aids nursing staff with uncomplicated medical treatments such as
change of a dressing, and receives training in the taking of
vital signs and administration of medication.
Lifts patients or residents on and off beds and stretchers with others.
Admit and discharge patients or residents with others with others.
May transport patients or residents to other sections, institutions,
hospitals, and courts with others.
Performs all duties as required in Center Control.
Performs all duties of a medical security officer recruit effectively.
May participate with the therapeutic team in planning and
implementing treatment programs for patients.
Escorts patients or residents to treatment rooms, x-ray, surgical
consultation, and other treatments as ordered.
Inspects windows, window bars, electrical equipment, heating,
screens, beds, and other fixtures for security purposes and
reports all irregularities to the supervisor.
Participates in rounds of dormitories and wards during the night
and notifies supervisory officer when unusual cases, irregularities,
and/or accidents and fires occur.
May search patients or residents.
Reports cases of illness.
Learns to take and verify a count of patients or residents at
scheduled times.
Aids patients and visitors on visiting days, and learns to
censor packages and keep records.
Participates in inspections of letters for contraband.
May supervise the washing and sterilization of walls,
floors, dishes, tables, and other equipment.
Learns to check the temperature of water in treatment tubs.
Sees that ice bags and hot water bottles are maintained at
correct temperature.
Receives training in preparation of routine reports and in
keeping records.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
AGE:
Minimum age of 18 years.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's icense
valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential
duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Ability to understand the condition and problems of persons
confined to a hospital or facility for psychiatric or
developmentally disabled.
Ability to understand problems and responsibilities implicit
in custodial work with patients or residents requiring medical
security measures.
Ability to understand medical, therapeutic, forensic psychiatry,
and hospital routines, methods, and procedures.
Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written
assignments and instructions, and to organize assigned custodial,
manual, and other work.
Ability to aid medical security officers with performance of the
work involved in the cleanliness, sanitation, orderliness, and
safety of the assigned areas.
Ability to perform uncomplicated, paraprofessional work in
treatment rooms, wards, and other areas.
Ability to assume responsibility for the physical well-being and
custody of mental patients or residents by day and by night.
Ability to recognize significant occurrences and conditions,
irregularities, behavior problems, and dangerous conditions, to
act intelligently and effectively when emergencies occur, and to
report such occurrences to the proper superior.
Ability to prepare reports.
Ability to maintain records.
Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency,
office or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand or communicate in
English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position.
American Sign Language or braille may also be considered
as acceptable forms of communication.

ADVANCEMENT
Appointees who successfully complete the twelve month
training period will be eligible for advancement to the title
among the following for which they have been trained:

The inability of an employee in this title to attain a level of
performance warranting advancement to a title listed above shall
be considered as cause for separation.
