Job Specification

 SUPERVISING MEDICAL SECURITY OFFICER

 DEFINITION:


 Under the supervision of the Director of Medical Security, or 
 other supervisor in a hospital or facility in the Department of 
 Health, supervises the work of the Medical Security Officers, 
 and Assistant Supervising Medical Security Officers on an 
 assigned shift, in the treatment, care and custody of patients 
 or residents in medical security areas; does other related work.

 NOTE: The examples of work for this title are for illustrative

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

 Organizes assigned supervisory treatment, care and custodial work
 of Medical Security personnel and supervises the performance of
 their work.

 Assigns and instructs Assistant Supervising Medical Security
 Officers and Medical Security Officers engaged in providing
 treatment for patient or resident care.

 Supervises the Assistant Supervising Medical Security Officers
 and Medical Security Officers in identification of patient or resident
 behavior patterns.

 Supervises the work operations and/or functional programs and has
 responsibility for recommending the hiring, firing, promoting,
 demoting and/or disciplining of employees.

 Accompanies medical staff members on visits to the medical
 security wards and ensures records are kept regarding types of
 care and treatment recommended for individual patients or residents.

 Supervises the maintenance of records of treatments ordered and
 given and keeps accurate records of patient or resident admissions,
 transfers, and deaths.

 Inspects wards, bathrooms and other areas to see that proper
 standards of cleanliness, sanitation, order, and safety are
 provided.

 Conducts daily fire inspection of the medical security building
 and areas.

 Supervises fire drills on all shifts.

 Supervises the security regulations and methods for maintaining
 security.

 Supervises the activities of Medical Security Officers involved
 in housekeeping and laundry and therapeutic programs.

 Participates with members of the treatment staff in supporting
 and maintaining therapy and rehabilitation programs; supervises,
 assigns and trains Security Personnel involved.

 Arranges court appearances for patient or residents and supervises 
 the necessary security for court trips.

 Prepares requisitions for patient's or resident's clothing.

 Prepares and maintains records of patient's or resident's personal 
 clothing and cash deposited in the Supervising Medical Security 
 Officer's office and assumes the responsibility for the proper care 
 and maintenance of patient's or resident's belongings and valuable.

 Prepares requisitions for ward supplies and assumes the
 responsibility for seeing that wards are supplied at all times
 with required equipment, materials and valuables.

 Prepares requisitions for repairs and new construction requests
 for the building and equipment.

 Prepares written reports.

 Supervises the establishment and maintains records and files.

 May be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
 and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
 agency, office or related units.

 REQUIREMENTS:

 EXPERIENCE:

 Three (3) years of experience in work involving the treatment, care 
 and custody of of patients or residents requiring medical security, 
 one (1) year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.

 LICENSE:

 Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license
 valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
 than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential
 duties of the position.

 KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

 Knowledge of the condition and problems of persons confined to 
 a hospital or facility for psychiatric or developmentally disabled.

 Knowledge of medical, therapeutic, psychiatric and patient or 
 resident care routines, methods, and procedures.

 Knowledge of patient or resident care plan.

 Knowledge of nursing and life threatening emergency care
 procedures.

 Knowledge of charting techniques, including legal requirements
 and legible entry.

 Ability to read and interpret laws and regulations and to apply
 them to specific situations.

 Ability to assign and supervise custodial activities.

 Ability to supervise the Medical Security members of an
 interdisciplinary treatment team.

 Ability to provide assignments and instructions to staff and
 supervise their work performance.

 Ability to conduct investigations and inspections.

 Ability to understand and interpret the advice and instructions
 of Physicians concerning medications, care and treatment of
 patients or residents.

 Ability to evaluate the need for supplies, equipment, and
 repairs.

 Ability to prepare reports.

 Ability to supervise and maintain records and files.

 Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or
 manual recording and information systems used by the agency,
 office or related units.

 Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in
 English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
 American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as
 acceptable forms of communication.
