SENIOR MEDICAL SECURITY OFFICER
DEFINITION:
Under direction of a designated supervisor in a hospital or facility in
the Department of Human Services, performs the duties involved in
the treatment, care, and custody of patients or residents who require
medical security; does related work as required.

SPECIAL SKILL
Applicants must be able to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate
in Spanish and English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Organizes assigned work and develops effective work methods as
assigned.
Insures that Medical Security Officer Recruits complete assigned
tasks.
Assumes responsibility for the physical well-being, care, and
custody of the patients or residents in an assigned ward, building or area.
Escorts patients or residents to work, school, meals, treatment rooms, wards,
church services, recreational activities, clinics, and court. As directed,
transports patients to/from designated areas outside the hospital.
Participates with recreational activities as assigned.
Provides a secure environment for patient care by maintaining
patient or resident order and discipline within the hospital and on grounds.
Assists with the feeding of patients or residents and in the serving of meals.
Provides assistance to patients or residents in areas of personal appearance,
hygiene, bathing, clothing, and dressing, and skills of everyday living
as assigned.
Is responsible for ordering linen supplies for assigned ward area
and maintaining patient or resident rooms with same and for ordering various
toiletry and sundry items on patients or residents behalf.
Lifts patients or residents on and off beds and stretchers.
Participates with the therapeutic treatment team in the planning and
implementation of treatment programs for patient or resident care and
rehabilitation.
Assists or takes the lead in assisting nursing staff in the care of patients or
residents who are undergoing treatment and performs simple nursing
procedures.
Observes patient or resident behavior patterns noting typical and atypical
psychiatric/medical conditions and reports same via progress note
entries, incident reports, special reports, and/or notification to
direct supervisor or other designated individual.
As required, supervises or conducts various inspections of windows,
window bars, level boxes, doors, electrical fixtures, heating and
ventilation equipment, and so forth, in regard to security irregularities
and reports same to supervisor.
As assigned, supervises or assists in the searching of patients
or residents and patient or resident areas.
As required, supervises rounds or makes rounds insuring general
fire safety precautions are in order by inspecting fire extinguishers,
water hoses, and fire alarm boxes; participates in routine fire drills.
Helps to keep assigned wards and areas clean and in neat
condition.
Assists with patients or residents and visitors on visiting days.
Takes the lead or participates in training activities as required.
Supervise or makes counts of patients or residents.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency,
office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
AGE:
Minimum age of 18 years.
EXPERIENCE:
One (1) year of direct care experience with psychiatric or developmentally
disabled patients or residents requiring medical security involving delivery
of therapeutic care and treatment individually or as a group member of a
clinical treatment team.
LICENSE:
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid
in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee
mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the condition and problems of persons confined to a
mental hospital and the problems and responsibilities implicit in
custodial work with patients or residents requiring medical security measures.
Knowledge of modern medical, therapeutic, psychiatric, and
patient resident care routines, methods, and procedures including a
clinical team concept.
Knowledge of basic emergency nursing care procedures.
Knowledge of typical and atypical behavior problems.
Ability to understand, assign, and carry out oral and written
assignments and instructions and to organize assigned custodial,
manual, and other work.
Ability to perform and monitor psychiatrically appropriate
para-professional routine duties with mental or developmentally
disabled patients or residents on wards, treatment rooms and
other areas.
Ability to oversee and perform the work involved in the cleanliness,
sanitation, orderliness, and safety of the assigned areas.
Ability to assume the responsibility for the physical wellbeing and custody
of mental patients or residents by day and by night.
Ability to supervise and assist with the bathing, dressing, and feeding
of patients or residents, with the preparing of patients or residents for
bed, with the escorting of patients or residents to varied areas within
the building and on the grounds, and with recreational activities.
Ability to recognize significant occurrences and conditions,
irregularities, behavior problems, and dangerous conditions, to act
intelligently and effectively when emergencies occur, and to report
such occurrences to the proper officials.
Ability to make entries on patients or residents charts.
Ability to prepare reports.
Ability to maintain the essential records.
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English
sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign
Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of
communication.
