INSTITUTIONAL TRADE INSTRUCTOR 2 INDUSTRIAL

DEFINITION:

Under supervision of a supervisory official in the Department of Corrections, 
trains, coordinates, plans, and oversees inmates in the assigned work activities
in areas including and similar to the Brush and Broom making and/or Industrial 
Finishing; as required assigns tasks to subordinates and takes lead in planning 
and implementation of the program; does other related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Directs and oversees inmates in a production environment of the specified field.

In the assigned field(s), provides instruction and takes lead in all facets of 
production and manufacturing, including providing instruction in the proper 
use, care, adjustment and minor repair of machinery, and tools.

Takes the lead in implementing the production plan to include maintaining 
the required inventory levels of raw material and the finished goods.

Establishes schedules and assigns work to inmates.

Provides information used to prepare the program budget.

Takes the approved measures required to ensure the custody, safety, 
training, and well-being of inmates assigned.

Requisition the necessary materials and supplies to maintain approved 
production and inventory levels.

Takes the lead in instructing the inmates in safe practices and in accident 
prevention measures and programs; enforces safety rules and regulations.

Maintains records, reports, and files.

Maintains records and files of inmates' time and progress, inventory 
management, and production statistics, and recommends program 
changes.

Attends all staff meetings and in-service training programs.

Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or 
manual recording information systems used by the agency, office 
or related units.

REQUIREMENTS

EXPERIENCE

Three (3) years of experience as an instructor in industrial finishing, 
and/or manufacturing of wood, metal and/or plastic products.

OR

Three (3) years of journey level experience in the industrial finishing, 
and/or manufacturing of wood, metal and/or plastic products in a 
commercial setting.

NOTE: A license or a certificate of journeyman or equivalent status from
a trade union or similar association in a field (those identified above) may 
be substituted for one (1) year of general or journey level experience.

LICENSE

Appointee will be required to possess a driver¿s license valid in New Jersey 
only if the operation of a vehicle rather than employee mobility is necessary 
to perform the essential duties of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Technical knowledge of a subject area as listed above in the experience 
statement.

Knowledge of the problems involved in overseeing and instructing inmates.

Knowledge of the methods used to provide vocational training in the fields, 
as listed above in the experience statement.

Knowledge of the machines, equipment, tools and raw materials and their 
properties.

Knowledge of the problems encountered and their potential solutions in 
using inmate labor with the primary purpose of providing meaningful 
on-the-job industrial/vocational training in a production environment.

Ability to provide vocational training to inmates.

Ability to take approved measures required to ensure proper training, care, 
custody, and safety of assigned inmates.

Ability to develop realistic production schedules and meet the associated 
deadlines.

Ability to give assignments and instructions to the inmates assigned to 
the work program and oversee the performance of their work.

Ability to organize assigned work and to develop effective work methods, 
plans, and schedules.

Ability to learn to assign and instruct subordinate employees and supervise 
the performance of their work, as required.

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative work relationship with superiors, 
associates/co-workers and with those persons interested in or concerned 
with the production/manufacture of product and the delivery of services.

Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and 
information systems used by the agency, office or related units.

Ability to oversee the maintenance and repair of the equipment.

Ability to maintain accurate records of time, materials used costs, inmate 
progress and production.

Ability to maintain essential records and files.

Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and 
information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English 
sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.  American Sign 
Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of 
communication.
