Job Specification

 
 ROOFER
 
 DEFINITION

 Under direction, does general roofing work involving the repair,
 construction, layout, and maintenance of buildings; does other
 related duties as required.

 NOTE: The examples of work for this title are for illustrative
 purposes only.  A particular position using this title may not
 perform all duties listed in this job specification.  Conversely,
 all duties performed on the job may not be listed.

 EXAMPLES OF WORK:

 Inspects roofs, flashing, gutters, and so forth to determine
 their condition, ascertains the nature of the required repairs,
 and completes whatever repairs are required.

 Constructs and repairs build-up roofing, both asphalt and coal
 tar pitch including flashing, gutters, roof drains, blocking,
 ballast, and reglets.

 Installs and patches roofing insulation, such as Fesco board,
 polyurethane-pearlite sandwich, tapered insulation, and so forth.

 Makes crickets, seals roof drains, caulks reglets, and so forth
 and does whatever is required to maintain a tight roofing system.

 Installs copper, aluminum, and plastic gutter systems, both
 recessed and exposed, and solders, caulks, and hangs these
 systems as required.

 Installs and repairs single ply roofing systems of rubber and
 plastic membrane, both loose laid and nailed systems, and applies
 and removes ballast as required.

 Inspects condition of a roof using the latest instruments such as
 thermal conductivity, nuclear, and infra-red, and lays out roof
 and performs measurements as required.

 Resaturates roofs and performs preventative maintenance as
 required.

 Supervises repairers who assist in the roofing work.

 Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
 and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
 agency, office, or related units.

 REQUIREMENTS:

      EXPERIENCE:

      Three (3) years of experience in work involving roofing,
 gutter repairs, and general carpentry associated with roofing
 work.

      NOTE: Two (2) years of vocational training experience may
 be substituted for two (2) years of the indicated experience.

      LICENSE:

      Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
 valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
 than  employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential
 duties of the  position.

 KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 Knowledge of the problems involved in inspecting roofs, flashing,
 gutters, and so forth to determine their condition and ascertain
 the nature of the required repairs.

 Knowledge of the construction and repair of built-up roofing,
 both asphalt and coal tar pitch including flashing, gutters, roof
 drains, blocking ballast, and reglets.

 Knowledge of the installation of copper, aluminum, and plastic
 gutter systems, both recessed and exposed, and the soldering,
 caulking, and hanging of these systems.

 Knowledge of the installation and repair of single ply roofing
 systems of rubber and plastic membrane, both loose laid and
 nailed systems.

 Ability to install and patch roofing insulation, such as Fesco
 board, polyurethane-pearlite sandwich, tapered insulation, and so
 forth.

 Ability to make crickets, seal roof drains, caulk reglets, and so
 forth to maintain a tight roofing system.

 Ability to use latest instruments, such as thermal conductivity,
 nuclear, and infra-red to inspect the condition of roofs.

 Ability to resaturate roofs and perform preventative maintenance
 as required.

 Ability to store, safeguard, clean, and properly use equipment,
 materials, instruments, and supplies.

 Ability to work from plans, specifications, and sketches.

 Ability to supervise repairers in the performance of roofing
 work.

 Ability to maintain essential records and files.

 Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or  manual
 recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
 related units.

 Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in
 English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
 American  Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as
 acceptable forms of  communication.
