Job Specification

  SENIOR REPAIRER 

  DEFINITION

  Under the direction of a Crew Supervisor or other supervisor 
  in a State department, institution or agency, performs the basic 
  maintenance, repair or mechanical adjustment work involved in
  varied types of buildings, building facilities, building utilities and/or 
  furniture; takes the lead over lower level repairers and helpers; 
  does related work as required.

  NOTE:  The examples of work for this title are for illustrative
  purposes only.  A particular position using this title may not 
  perform all duties listed in this job specification.  Conversely, 
  all duties performed on the job may not be listed.

  EXAMPLES OF WORK:

  As a team leader, works in the painting of wood, metal, brick 
  and cement walls, floors, and ceilings of the interior and exterior 
  of buildings; the staining, varnishing and refinishing of cabinets, 
  desks, chairs and other furnishings and equipment; and the painting 
  and repainting of pipes, radiators, tin roofs, and other types of iron
  work.

  As a team leader, works in the repair and maintenance of walls,
  ceilings, interior and exterior brickwork, tile floors, drains, cement
  and concrete floors, sidewalks, steps, foundations, and other types 
  of masonry, plastering and stone work.

  As a team leader, works in the repair and maintenance of water,
  drainage, waste and gas lines; toilet bowls, wash basins, and urinals;
  and radiators, refrigerators, laundry machines and other types of
  plumbing and steamfitting fixtures, fittings, appliances and machinery.

  As a team leader, works in the repair and maintenance of buildings, 
  office furniture, screens, storm sashes, frames, windows, ceilings, 
  partitions, and other types of carpentry work.

  As a team leader, works in the installation, inspection, repair,
  and maintenance of cables, wiring, motor, generators, pumps,
  refrigerators, radios, sound equipment, telephone line switchboard, 
  oil burners, and other type of electrical equipment, appliance fixtures,
  machinery, and circuits.

  As a team leader, works in the repair and maintenance of copper
  leaders and gutters and gutters and slate roofs, including the
  operations of flashing, papering, cutting and punching prior to the
  installation of slate; pots, steamers, cans, pails, and other kitchen
  and dairy equipment; and ventilators, air duct, and weatherproofing
  equipment.

  As a team leader, works in the cleaning and repair of boilers, the
  repairing of locks, and the repair and maintenance of automobiles,
  trucks, snow plow, and sand spreaders.

  Performs welding and/or brazing operations to repair furniture or
  equipment.

  Oversees performance of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance, 
  repair and laboring work of a helper.

  Obtains, stores, safeguards and properly uses equipment, materials
  supplies and tools.

  Keeps records of work done, materials used, and time spent.

  In the Department of Human Services, may be required to undergo
  fire training classes.

  Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or 
  manual recording and information systems used by the agency,
  office, or related units.

  REQUIREMENTS:

  EXPRIENCE

  Two (2) years of experience in work involving the inspection, repair 
  and general maintenance of household, office and other equipment, 
  fixtures, fittings, appliances, machinery, furnishings, and buildings.

  LICENSE:

  Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in 
  New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee
  mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

  Appointees may be required to possess a valid Commercial
  Driver's License (CDL) and applicable endorsements for the 
  class and type of vehicle being operated.

  KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  Knowledge of the procedures, methods, equipment, and supplies
  used in the maintenance of buildings, and their fixtures, appliances,
  furnishings and fittings.

  Knowledge welding and/or brazing operations.

  Knowledge of an ability to do the work involved in painting,
  staining and varnishing varied types of surfaces; in repairing and
  maintaining cement, concrete, tile, brick and other floors, ceilings,
  foundations, sidewalks, and steps, in maintaining repairing and
  repairing plumbing fixtures, water, drainage, waste and gas lines,
  radiators, laundry machinery and other appliances; in doing 
  carpentry work of varied types; in installing, repairing and 
  maintaining cables, wiring, motors and varied types of electrical 
  fixtures; in repairing roofs, gutters, dairy and other equipment; and 
  in repairing boilers.

  Ability to understand, remember and carry out oral and written
  directions.

  Ability to learn quickly from observation, from oral and written 
  explanations, and from demonstrations.

  Ability to perform welding and/or brazing operations in repairing 
  of furniture and equipment.

  Ability to analyze simple maintenance and repair problems,
  organize assigned work, and develop effective work methods.

  Ability to give written and or oral directions to helper engaged in 
  the work of the unit and oversees the performance of work.

  Ability to work effectively with associates and other employees.

  Ability to do and/or learn to do general institutional maintenance 
  and repair work of varied types under the supervision of a Crew 
  Supervisor or experience artisan.

  Ability to learn to use the equipment, tools, materials, and
  supplies used in painting, roofing, plastering, masonry, electrical,
  plumbing and other skilled crafts with care and discrimination.

  Ability to acquire needed techniques and a degree of skill in
  maintenance and repair crafts.

  Ability to requisition, store, safeguard, record, and properly use 
  equipment, materials, supplies, and tools.

  Ability to keep simple records.

  Ability to learn and utilize various types of electronic and/or 
  manual recording and information systems used by the agency,
  office, or related units.

  Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in
  English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.  American
  Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable 
  forms of communication.
