COMPUTER OPERATOR ASSISTANT
DEFINITION:
Under close supervision in an information processing production
unit, receives advanced technical on-the-job training in the operation
of a large-scale multiprogrammed computer and its periphal devices;
directly assigned; does related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Receives technical, on-the-job training in the Data Processing
Operations unit concerning the procedures and techniques of
equipment operation and work processes and methods.
Assists in mounting forms on printers; assists in forms alignment
and adjustments.
Under general supervision, inserts and removes punched card
readers and card punches; assists in clearing malfunctions to
recover from read or punch checks.
Assists in mounting and dismounting magnetic media in tape
and disk drives.
Observes and learns the operation of the system console.
Assists in the delivery of hard copy and magnetic outputs in
accordance with instructions and procedures and returns
magnetic media used as input to the proper locations.
Assists in the maintenance of equipment logs and records.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
and/or manual recording and computerized information systems
used by the agency, office or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
Successful completion of a one (1) year technological training
program in the operation of electronic computers or one (1) year
of experience in the operation of data processing related equipment,
e.g. data entry, microfiche, electronic accounting machine operations.
LICENSE:
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in
New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee
mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge in the operation of electronic and/or mechanical
equipment used in computer input/output such as electronic
accounting machines, microfilm/microfiche, data entry, and
so forth.
Knowledge of the principles of computer operations.
Ability to learn new procedures accurately and rapidly and
to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to learn to recognize, participate in their correction, or
refer data processing operations difficulties to a supervisor.
Ability to learn and maintain essential logs and records.
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or
manual recording and information systems used by the
agency, office, or related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in
English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered
as acceptable forms of communication.
