RESOURCE INTERPRETIVE SPECIALIST 3
 
DEFINITION:

Under the general supervision of a Resource Interpretive Specialist 4 
or other supervisory official in the Natural and Historic Resources 
Programs, Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), researches 
and publicizes environmental, historic, and/or natural resource 
interpretation informational material; monitors the use of a natural or 
historic resource facility; makes recommendations regarding material, 
activities, and/or policies; functions as a lead worker handling the most 
complex work and providing guidance to lower-level staff; does other 
related duties as required.

NOTE:  The examples of work for this title are for illustrative purposes

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Coordinates arrangements for environmental, historic, and/or natural 
resource public events and required publications including artwork and 
informational graphics.

Recommends and implements creative approaches in the development 
of various books, pamphlets, and reading material; reviews various 
publications and brochures for content and style.

Conducts research from both primary and secondary sources, interprets 
appropriate material, incorporates significant elements, and prepares 
special projects of environmental, historic, and/or natural resource events, 
programs, and exhibits.

Recommends editorial policies to supervisory officials.

Attends, plans, and coordinates arrangements for conferences, seminars, 
and workshops, providing background and written information when 
appropriate.

Communicates and coordinates with vendors on information regarding 
graphic art, printing, and photography for various publications.

Ensures projects are on schedule and deadlines are met; resolves 
problems that may arise and refers critical delays to a Resource 
Interpretive Specialist 4 or other supervisory official.

Drafts correspondence.

Meets and consults with authors, following up and keeping track of 
inflow of article illustration for all environmental, historic, and/or natural 
resource events.

Develops audio/video/digital programs for educational programs.

Develops, facilitates, and provides training for interpretive/educational 
staff; provides information on related training opportunities with other 
organizations.

Refers officials and news media to appropriate authorities.

Works with staff members on the implementation of the Statewide 
Interpretive Plan; may evaluate existing programs, and develop and 
implement new interpretive and educational programs using the 
objectives of the Statewide Interpretive Plan.  This includes continued 
development of teacher training programs, associated tours, and the 
historic resource facility interpretive programs.

Coordinates the appropriate use of historic resource facilities with local 
historical, educational, and social groups.  

Confers with educators and other groups on the content of proposed 
programs, and prepares pre- and post-visit materials.

Maintains the collection of the historic house museum or historic village, 
including cleaning, cataloging, and basic conservation of historic objects 
using current museum methods.

Performs advanced curatorial care and museum maintenance including
the proper storage of the museum collections; monitors exhibits and 
storage areas for potential environmental problems when assigned to a 
historic resource facility.

Trains staff and/or volunteers in the interpretation, maintenance, daily 
procedures, and functions of historic or natural resource interpretive 
facilities.

Coordinates specific environmental or historic programs and events in 
conjunction with appropriate staff, which may involve assisting in the 
continued implementation of teaching training programs.

Provides liaison to the academic community and/or the appropriate 
partner organizations regarding environmental or historic educational 
programs and/or initiatives.

Provides technical assistance in response to complex inquiries.

Assists supervisory officials in budget and spending plan preparation, 
review of capital projects, and land acquisition programs related to 
natural resource interpretive and/or historic activities.

Provides guidance to resource interpretive specialists of lower levels 
and takes the lead on work-related matters.

May review the work done by resource interpretive specialists of lower 
levels.

Establishes and maintains records and files.

Prepares reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.

Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or 
manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, 
or related units.

REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's 
degree in Ecology, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, 
Environmental Science, Wildlife Management, one of the Biological 
Sciences, History, American History, Art History, Architectural History, 
American Studies, American Literature, or Museum Studies.

EXPERIENCE:

Three (3) years of experience in the research and preparation of 
environmental, natural resource or historic resource information, 
natural or historic resource interpretation, the implementation of 
environmental, natural or historic resource programs, or the planning, 
preparation, and care of exhibits of objects of artistic or historic value.

NOTE:  A Master's degree in Ecology, Forestry, Natural Resource 
Management, Environmental Science, Wildlife Management, one 
of the Biological Sciences, History, American History, Art History, 
Architectural History, American Studies, American Literature, 
Museum Studies, or closely related field may be substituted for 
one (1) year of experience.

NOTE:  Appointees may be required to be bonded by an appropriate 
agency dealing with artifacts and/or collections.

LICENSE:

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in 
New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee 
mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of research methods and techniques. 

Knowledge of the methods used to write, edit, and develop articles 
for publications.

Knowledge of the principles of natural and historic resource 
management.

Knowledge of the methods used to prepare museum exhibits 
and displays.

Knowledge of graphic arts required in the development and 
maintenance of environmental, historic, and/or natural resource 
publications.

Knowledge of the methods used to handle and protect museum 
objects.

Ability to recommend, explain, and implement creative ideas for 
articles/features regarding environmental, historic, and/or natural 
resource publications.

Ability to gather and analyze information.

Ability to prepare, review, and edit written material.

Ability to prepare technical and other informative reports containing 
findings, conclusions, and recommendations.

Ability to draft correspondence.

Ability to analyze, interpret, and apply basic rules and regulations.

Ability to establish and maintain records and files.

Ability to provide leadership and guidance to resource interpretive 
specialists of lower levels.

Ability to prepare, select, and arrange suitable environmental, 
historic, and/or natural resource photographic and illustrative 
articles.

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships 
with staff and those interested in the work of the program.

Ability to plan State environmental, historic, and/or natural resource 
events and to assist/or act as a liaison in contacting other government 
offices and private concerns.

Ability to evaluate interpretive and/or educational programs, assess 
the effectiveness of programs, and develop improvements as required.

Ability to catalog museum objects in an appropriate manner, using 
current museum methods.

Ability to analyze historical museum problems and develop solutions.

Ability to plan and conduct guided tours, explain specific points of 
interest in each natural area and historic resource environment, 
and interpret the ecology, history, and allied natural history values.

Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual 
recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or 
related units.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English 
sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.  American Sign 
Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms 
of communication.
