RESOURCE INTERPRETIVE SPECIALIST 1, NATURAL RESOURCES
DEFINITION:
Under the close supervision of a Resource Interpretive Specialist 4
or other supervisory official in the Natural and Historic Resources
Program, Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), assists in
coordinating research and publicizing information related to natural
resource interpretation and scheduled events; assists in the monitoring
and use of a natural resource facility; does other related duties as
required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Conducts research from both primary and secondary sources, interprets
appropriate material, incorporates significant elements, and prepares
special projects of environmental and/or natural resource events,
programs, and exhibits.
Assists in coordinating arrangements for environmental and/or natural
resource public events/publications, including the development of
publications involving artwork and informational graphics.
Recommends creative approaches in the development of various
books, pamphlets, and reading material; reviews various publications
and brochures for content and style.
Provides recommendations regarding office displays, and ordering
and distribution of appropriate environmental and/or natural resource
brochures and publications.
Researches and gathers environmental and natural resource awareness
information to educate the public and provide a service concerning
recreational activities.
Gathers information for the bidding process from vendors for
environmental and/or natural resource brochures.
Maintains a reference system for the graphic mechanics of
environmental and/or natural resource public information supplies.
Assists in updating publications, campground guides, and other
booklets and brochures containing environmental and/or natural
resource information about State facilities.
Assists in making arrangements for conferences, seminars, and
workshops, providing background and written information when
appropriate.
Provides technical assistance in response to routine or basic inquiries.
Performs the required care and maintenance of the natural resource
facility.
Prepares reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
Assists in the development of the interpretive program and general
maintenance of interpretive facilities in a State forest, park, or natural
area.
Conducts lectures, classes, educational programs, and/or guided
tours for groups of different ages and interest levels at a natural
resource facility; interprets ecology and/or natural science values.
Assists in developing special programs, events, and exhibits to
increase public knowledge and appreciation of the natural resource
facility's history and significance.
Assists in monitoring the use of the natural resource facility; identifies
and corrects deficient conditions and notifies the proper authorities.
Locates, develops, maintains, and provides information regarding
interpretive facilities on newly acquired and existing areas.
Assists in investigating complaints concerning alleged violations of
forest, park, and/or natural area laws.
Establishes and maintains records and files.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or
manual recording and information systems used by the agency,
office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's
degree in Ecology, Forestry, Natural Resource Management,
Environmental Science, Wildlife Management, or one of the Biological
Sciences.
EXPERIENCE:
One (1) year of experience in the research and preparation of
environmental or natural resource information, natural resource
interpretation, or the implementation of environmental or natural
resource programs.
NOTE: A Master's degree in Ecology, Forestry, Natural Resource
Management, Environmental Science, Wildlife Management, one
of the Biological Sciences, or closely related field may be substituted
for the one (1) year of experience.
LICENSE:
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in
New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee
mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of research methods and techniques.
Knowledge of the methods used to write, edit, and develop articles
for publications.
Knowledge of the principles of natural resource management.
Knowledge of graphic arts required in the development and
maintenance of environmental and/or natural resource publications.
Ability to recommend creative ideas for articles/features regarding
environmental and/or natural resource publications.
Ability to gather and analyze information.
Ability to prepare, review, and edit written material.
Ability to prepare technical and other informative reports containing
findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
Ability to draft correspondence.
Ability to conduct guided tours, explain specific points of interest
in each natural resource facility, and interpret the ecology and
natural history values.
Ability to prepare, select, and arrange suitable environmental
and/or natural resource photographic and illustrative articles.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
with staff and those interested in the work of the program.
Ability to plan State environmental and/or natural resource events.
Ability to identify, report, and assist in the basic preventive
maintenance of hazardous and detrimental conditions of the
natural resource facility.
Ability to establish and maintain records and files.
Ability to analyze, interpret, and apply basic rules and regulations.
Ability to investigate complaints concerning alleged violations of
forest, park, and/or natural area laws.
Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
related units.
Ability to read, write, speak, understand or communicate in English
sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign
language or Braille may also be considered acceptable forms of
communication.
