Job Specification

PROMOTIONAL SALES SPECIALIST  

DEFINITION:

Under direction of a supervisory official in the Department of Corrections, is responsible for the promotion of sales and services activities including, but not restricted to : cultivation of consumer markets; identification of market needs; coordination of new product line and/or development or modification to existing lines; design and/or dissemination of promotional sales materials utilizing media and mechanical productions through planning, developing, and implementing promotional sales campaigns. Coordinates activities with other units within State Use Industries to achieve customer satisfaction with product and service, selection/design, quality, price, scheduling of delivery/installation, and resolution of complaints/concerns. Reviews and finalizes orders for products and services within established protocols; does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Designs and distributes promotional materials like sales catalogs, pamphlets, brochures, exhibits, print advertisements and displays to promote the sale of DEPTCOR State Use Industries products and services to state, county, municipal agencies, and educational boards.

Plans, develops, and/or implements various promotional sales campaigns to promote the sales of DEPTCOR State Use Industries products and services.

Attends conventions to promote DEPTCOR State Use Industries products and services to state, county, and municipal agencies, and educational boards.

Analyzes seasonal needs and sales patterns to determine the optimal time for promotional programs/campaigns.

Makes sales presentations to existing or new potential customers.

Makes on-site visits to customers. Determines customer needs, makes note of pertinent site conditions, reviews and recommends relevant product lines/services, and prepares estimate of costs.

Confers with other organizational units to coordinate the electronic development of product prototypes, planning of product line customizations, and scheduling of delivery/installation to meet customer needs.

Makes on site visits during and after product delivery/installation to ensure order was completed as specified and that customer satisfaction was achieved.

May assist with the investigations regarding customer complaints, which may require site visits. Prepares various reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.

Drafts correspondence as necessary.

Maintains sales records and customer files.

Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency office, or related units.

REQUIREMENTS:

NOTE:Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester-hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience.

Seven (7) years of sales advertising professional experience to include the preparation and dissemination of catalogs, flyers, brochures, exhibits, and displays.

OR

Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and three (3) years of the above-mentioned professional experience.

NOTE:"Professional experience refers to work that is analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range of basic knowledge of the profession's concepts and practices; and is performed with the authority to act and make accurate and informed decisions.

SPECIAL NOTE: The duties of this position may require heavy lifting of such items as cartons of promotional literature, and sample products used in promoting State Use Industries products and services.

LICENSE:

Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of sales promotion techniques and their application to specific products, and general purchasing procedures.

Knowledge of the product uses, functions and specifications, price advantages, productions schedules and delivery schedules.

Knowledge of the use of promotion sales materials, the techniques relating to the placement of displays, signs, and other materials.

Knowledge of problems encountered in the administration of a customer service program which is sensitive to the needs and concerns of the customer.

Knowledge of procedures for ensuring effective, courteous communication with customers.

Ability to organize assigned field and office work, and develop appropriate work methods.

Ability to conduct market surveys, identify demand for new or modified product lines, and analyze sales and promotional problems.

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with employees, users/clients and all others; and to conduct presentations using promotional materials.

Ability to deal with varied types of organizational representatives who have complaints regarding delivered products and/or services.

Ability to resolve complaints/problems of customers.

Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.

Ability to draw and read schematic diagrams, fabrication drawings, and/or blueprints.

Ability to prepare clear, technically sound, accurate, and informative statistical reports with recommendations; and to prepare ancillary correspondence.

Ability to acquire acknowledge of the internal organization, industrial methods and metal core value technologies.

Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
