Job Specification

COMMUNITY PROGRAM SPECIALIST JUVENILE JUSTICE COMMISSION  

DEFINITION:

Under close supervision of a supervisory official within the Juvenile Justice Commission, assists in facilitating the placement of juvenile offenders, development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of juvenile offender programs, living arrangements, and other related services; does other related duties.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

Plans, assesses, develops, implements, monitors, and evaluates sponsors, mentors, juveniles and their families, and programs for appropriate placement, living arrangements, and related services ensuring that such actions are in the best interest of the juveniles and public safety.

Works as member of the regional team in developing programs/services, individual case plans, assessing current/future needs of juveniles and their families, and documenting juvenile, family, and program performance as related to established standards, administrative code, and laws.

Facilities training and awareness related to community programs, living arrangements, prevention, treatment, and aftercare of juvenile offenders and other related services.

May assist in coordinating activities among the family courts, county representatives, juvenile justice facilities and community services, and other interested officials, visits juvenile justice facilities, and assists in the case planning of juveniles for placement.

Prepares and maintains records, reports, evaluations, and all other correspondence in the course of official duties.

Participates in various duties as a member of the regional team through the attendance of meetings, orienting new team members, serving on committees, and serving as a resource to the team.

May assist in the investigation of suitability of juvenile offenders and potential sponsors as related to be prevention, treatment, and aftercare of juvenile offenders.

Develops and maintains effective working relationships with other agencies and the community in order to address the proper delivery of services while promoting a positive public image of the Commission's community services.

Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

REQUIREMENTS:

NOTE: Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience.

Five (5) years of professional experience in program delivery experience in providing education, habilitative, or social services in programs for juveniles with emotional, social, or behavioral problems.

OR

Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and one (1) year of the above-mentioned professional experience.

NOTE: "Professional experience" refers to work that is analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range of basic knowledge of the profession's concepts and practices; and is performed with the authority to act and make accurate and informed decisions.

LICENSE:

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in NJ only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of theory, principles, methods, and techniques in delinquency prevention and treatment.

Knowledge of techniques necessary for training.

Knowledge of the interviewing and selection process.

Ability to apply theories, methods, and techniques of juvenile delinquency prevention and treatment.

Ability to work effectively with staff, other state agencies, and the public.

Ability to prepare correspondence, reports, and studies.

Ability to analyze individual/general programmatic needs and to make recommendations based on this analysis.

Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
