SUPERVISING PUBLIC HEALTH REPRESENTATIVE DEFINITION:
Under general direction of a Division Director, Service Director, Program Coordinator, or other supervisory official in the Department of Health and Senior Services, plans and directs activities and staff of a major unit involved in the administration of public health programs; does other related duties.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Coordinates, and supervises the field and office work of a specific statewide or regional public health program designed for a large geographical area or areas with a high mortality/morbidity rate.
Implements disease prevention and control programs.
Manages a local community health clinic; coordinates administrative and field functions and analyzes public health problems.
Prepares service plans for the area of responsibility and evaluates plan efficiency.
Plans and supervises administrative aspects and activities of a specific public health program for a region or district.
Supervises a medical team in establishing contact and setting up immunization or treatment centers.
Provides assignments to staff and supervises work performance.
Visits, consults, and provides technical assistance/guidance to local health agencies and to other interested groups.
Provides technical and consultant services in the planning/development of disease prevention/treatment grants from federal/state funds.
Supervises staff in collection and analysis of data contained in medical histories or in reported data.
Supervises compilation of statistical data by individual clinics, registrars, investigators, and other groups.
Supervises investigations of improper reporting techniques.
Instructs field representatives in the methods and skills used for early disease detection treatment and epidemiology.
Supervises personnel involved in selective serologic, epidemiologic, and other public health surveys and collection of data and follow-up activities.
Supervises staff in the management of regional or district disease control programs.
Prepares grant applications and compiles data to support budget requests for funds.
Reviews and evaluates applications for public health funding; provides recommendations for approval.
Plans and develops specific educational programs for various health medical and professional groups, and other interested parties to promote program objectives in areas of disease prevention, detection, treatment, and control.
Plans and supervises the compilation of data to include in reports of various local programs and activities.
Plans and supervises the collection of data to include in state/federal budget requests.
Collects, analyzes, and prepares data and educational material for use in a specific department program to promote program objectives.
Addresses civic, service, social, educational, and other groups interested in department programs and services.
Establishes, and maintains cooperative working relationships with regional/local health department personnel and others involved in the work of the program.
Supervises field staff visiting local health departments, physicians, and others to provide epidemiological and consultative services and obtain cooperation in reporting communicable disease and related essential data.
Supervises work operations and/or functional programs and has responsibility for employee evaluations and for effectively recommending the firing, hiring, promoting, demoting, and/or disciplining of employees.
Prepares correspondence in the course of official duties.
Prepares reports and other reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
Supervises the maintenance of records and files.
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
REQUIREMENTS:
NOTE: Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education. Thirty (30) semester hour credits are equal to one (1) year of relevant experience.
Eight (8) years of professional experience in a health or social service related program which shall have included responsibility for interviewing, investigating, and/or conducting public health care surveys or patient care services, two (2) years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.
OR
Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university; and four (4) years of the above-mentioned professional experience, two (2) years of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.
NOTE: "Professional experience" refers to work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the authority to act according to one's own judgment and make accurate and informed decisions.
LICENSE:
Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
