 CLAIMS ADJUDICATOR SUPPORT SPECIALIST 2
 

 DEFINITION

 Under the direction of a supervisory official, Division of
 Disability Determination Services, performs claims support and
 clerical work in the compilation of medical and non-medical data
 in the adjudication of claims filed under the Social Security
 Disability Programs; does other related duties.

 NOTE: The examples of work for this title are for illustrative

 NOTE: Appointments may be made to positions requiring 
 bilingual skills.

 SPECIAL SKILL
 Applicants must be able to read, write, speak, understand, or 
 communicate in Spanish and English sufficiently to perform 
 the duties of this position.


 EXAMPLES OF WORK:

 Prepares medical evidence records through written correspondence.

 Extracts data from files and codes relevant information on the
 appropriate forms.

 Telephones claimants to obtain missing or additional information
 to complete development of claims.

 Receives and opens mail regarding claims filed through the AS400
 system or other information system.

 Sorts medial and other evidence with appropriate case file.

 Contacts non-medical sources ascertain additional evidence needed
 to make a final determination.

 Receives and responds to inquiries on status of claims.

 Contacts claimants for permission to obtain additional medical
 evidence.

 Keeps tickler files up to date.

 Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic
 and/or manual recording and information systems used by the
 agency, office, or related units.


 REQUIREMENTS:

      EDUCATION:

 Successful completion of sixty (60) semester credit hours at
 an accredited college.

      EXPERIENCE:

 One (1) year of experience in the collection and
 verification of information and data for eligibility
 determination for benefits or services.

      NOTE: Applicants who do not possess the required education
 may substitute additional experience as indicated above on a year-
 for-year basis thirty (30) semester credit hours is equal to one
 (1) year of experience.

      LICENSE:

 Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license
 valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather
 than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential
 duties of the position.


 KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

 Ability to read and interpret the disability provisions of the
 Social Security Program.

 Ability to comprehend and apply the standards and procedures for
 collecting and recording of medical and other data.

 Ability to follow directions and to complete specific forms used
 in the division.

 Ability to learn basic terms in human anatomy, physiology,
 pathology, psychiatry, and childhood diseases.

 Ability to maintain essential records and files containing
 reports on medical and other evidence.

 Ability to correspond verbally and in writing with claimants,
 advocates, medical and non-medical sources to obtain the
 necessary information to make determination.

 Ability to prepare simple reports of completed actions.

 Ability to understand relevant codes to extract medical and non-
 medical data from files.

 Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with
 claimants, both orally and in writing.

 Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual
 recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or
 related units.

 Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in
 English sufficiently to perform duties of this position.
 American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as
 acceptable forms of communication.
